Our Origin
Colas is a subsidiary of the Bouygues group . Bouygues became the main shareholder in 1986 and has been the 100% owner of Colas since December 2023.
The origin of Colas dates back to 1922, with the filing in London of the Cold Spray bitumen emulsion patent. This innovation was renamed Cold Asphalt in 1924. The abbreviation of Cold Asphalt gave rise to the name Colas. Colas was created to meet a challenge: to exploit the patent for this bitumen emulsion, which revolutionized road construction techniques.
We have been leading the way for over 90 years.
Over the decades, the Group has expanded its range of expertise by integrating complementary trades to road construction, mainly building materials and, around the early 2000s, railways. Present in Europe and, from the 1930s, in Africa, and later in North America in the 1960s, Colas has multiplied its operations across all five continents. Guided by the pioneering spirit of its origins, the Group has developed innovative products, processes and solutions. Today, Colas continues to innovate responsibly to meet the ever-growing and evolving mobility needs.
